Christopher Marlowe
Christopher Marlowe attended Cambridge on a scholarship, and received his bachelor's degree in 1584 and his master's in 1587. In the same year, his first play, "Tamburlaine," was performed in London with great success. He wrote several other plays, although their chronology is unknown; however, all were on what were considered to be very controversial topics at the time. There are many rumors concerning his true identity - some say he was a criminal and a fighter, while others say he was a spy to Elizabeth I. He died in a barfight that he himself had instigated.

Marlowe or Shakespeare?
Many people believe that Marlowe, who was a contemporary of Shakespeare, would have been far more famous (and considered a better writer) had he not been killed in the aforementioned barfight.
Marlowvians
One of my college professors, touching on the conspiracy theories about who Shakespeare "really" was, talked about Marlowvians -- scholars (or perhaps just conspiracy theorists) who believed that "William Shakespeare" was Marlowe's code name, and that he was, as mentioned above, truly a spy for Elizabeth I.
Perhaps it's not the most stable of theories, but there are a few things going for it. For example, the theories state that the bulk of Marlowe's work was done in Italy ... and where do so many of Shakespeare's plays take place? Granted, the writer wouldn't have to be present in the same country as his works, but I have to admit it's made even me suspicious.
The Marlowe Society has a lot more information and "proof" on this. It is, to me, probably the most fun theory I've heard so far.
