Marie Corelli - ArcaMax Book ClubMary Mackay began her career as a musician, adopting the name Marie Corelli for the stage. She gave up this pursuit in her 30s and published her first novel, "A Romance of Two Worlds." Despite her popularity, she was considered untalented and melodramatic as an author. Later in her career, she wrote many works attempting to reconcile Christianity with many metaphysical ideas such as reincarnation. Despite her notoriety during her lifetime, she is virtually unknown today.

One of ArcaMax's featured authors, but probably not one with many true fans. Has anyone read any of her works?

I came across Marie Corelli via some reference [which I now forget], which linked her into fantasy writing. I once tried reading Marie Corelli's "The Mighty Atom". It is sadly unutterably dull, with no redeeming features. Unfortunately, whatever the importance of what she had to say, she is now nothing more than a curiosity.

Mind you, plenty of contemporary prize-winning novels are equally turgid and pretentious.
