I've begun reading several different authors that fall into a horror??/romance/paranormal/??? For instance I really enjoyed Erin McCarthy's novels/romances involving vampires in Las Vegas. I liked the fact that there were romantic aspects as well as the vampire aspect. I don't really think of them as horror. Then there are the Argeneau novels by Lynsay Sands were are excellent too. I also started reading a novel by Kerrilyn Sparks again with the Vampire aspect. Has anyone else read these or similar ones? What was your take on them?

I was shocked when I recently walked down the romance aisle and saw the number of SF novels there masquerading as romance. There seem to be a lot of new SF novels that are aimed at women with strong female characters and traditional romantic male leads.
Where is the line drawn? When is a romance novel actually SF? When is an SF novel actually a romance? And why the distinction - marketing? Are any of the "paranormal romance" novels good SF? Or are they being justifiably ignored by the SF community? |
