Peter Pan (Peter and Wendy)

Peter Pan is a play written by Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie (1860–1937), and first presented on the stage in 1904. In 1911, Barrie novelized the play into a book, Peter Pan and Wendy. It is a story of a mischievous little boy who refuses to grow up. Peter Pan, a fierce swordfighter, spends his never-ending childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland as leader of his gang, the Lost Boys. The story features some fantastical elements, including that Peter has some magical powers, such as the power to fly, and his friends include a fairy named Tinker Bell. In addition, a crocodile that has swallowed a ticking clock stalks the pirate leader, Captain Hook, Peter's nemesis.

From the Wikipedia article "Peter Pan".

There are a lot of Peter Pan movies, re-interpretations, and spinoffs out there -- the Disney version (of course), the Broadway musical, Hook, Finding Neverland, and apparently another direct-to-video Disney sequel come to mind. I'm curious as to how many people have read the original book, as opposed to being familiar only with the Disney version.

I've read the story both as a play and as a novel, though I remember the novel more clearly. In addition, I've seen the version with Mary Matin numerous times.

I have a question to pose, the answer to which is unclear to me...

In the novelization, the last few pages contain a comment by Mr. Barrie to the effect that we all should know what person Captain Hook represents. I assume it was a person in power during his lifetime. Does anyone know for certain whom he was talking about?

I was under the impression that 'Peter Pan' was the title of the stage play, and 'Peter and Wendy,' was the novilization. I have read 'Peter and Wendy' and have seen a couple of TV versions besides the Disney film.
