After reading the book, Flatland , I dont think I'll ever look at a square or sphere the same way again ! ( or any geometric shape for that matter) The first half was 'slow', with the explaination of square's home enviroment, but I didn't want to stop reading for the second half. Square seems alot like any of us on 'earth. What we dont understand, we mock....

This author blew my mind back in my college days, especially "The Glass Bead Game." Would love to find his books on ArcaMax.

thank you for the information, I have only read Boddhisatva, I think is the name it is a book he wrote about the life of Buddha. There are other great Existential writers: Kafka, Camus, Sartre. Their writing is also quite interesting, my favorite is Camus. Some of his novels are: The stranger, the Plague(about the bubonic plague in a town in his native Algeria), etc. He also wrote many short stories. chord0

In muntaka upanishad of hindu philosophy chapter third describes a story of two birds. one is adma (soul) and another is jeev.(life) jeev eats the fruit of fig tree (Pippala) and adma is looking at her without any influence.. this story is told to explain even though the life (living being) is doing the worldly things (including sex) it will not affect the soul inside. the following points are coincide. adam and adma. eve and jeev. pipple and bible. fig and fig (not changed). forbidden fruit is forbidden fruit (not changed) upanishads are 5000 years old. bible is 2000 years old. is it possible that this story has taken this new shape in 3000 years?

I liked that book but I don't remember it well; I read it years ago. I remember reading the sequel and being disappointed by it.
I think Jeffery Archer was the author.

perhaps the best known is Asimov with his robot novels, but others come to mind HG Wells, Roger Zelazny, simak, and heinlein. what are your favorites? Oh and how I could forget Herbert's Dune.

I've begun reading several different authors that fall into a horror??/romance/paranormal/??? For instance I really enjoyed Erin McCarthy's novels/romances involving vampires in Las Vegas. I liked the fact that there were romantic aspects as well as the vampire aspect. I don't really think of them as horror. Then there are the Argeneau novels by Lynsay Sands were are excellent too. I also started reading a novel by Kerrilyn Sparks again with the Vampire aspect. Has anyone else read these or similar ones? What was your take on them? R

I'm doing a Summer Reading Project on Pride and Prejudice. I found it delightful, itreminded me of a soap opera but the best one ever created.
I need help finding a book with the shared theme, Reputation, however so I can compare and contrast the two of them. Would someone be so kind as to help me? Thank you.

"I also loved the movie with Kiera Knightly. I have the PBS version that is 6 hours long that I really enjoy also. I have in the last few months purchased Persuasions but haven't taken the time to get it read yet. Jane Austen is a wonderful writer. As far as finding a similar book for you to compare to, that could be tough. Jane's books are so full of "drama" as my daughters would say. LOL! Although not exactly like Pride and Prejudice the book that comes to mind is maybe Little Women. Not the same story at all, but one of sisters who are close knit and their lives. Another one I found but have not read yet...but will go get this book soon, is the following: Frederica / by: Georgette Heyer Calling this novel a "masterpiece of words and humor," Nora Roberts writes the Introduction in homage to an author considered the creator of the modern Regency genre. In this story, the prized bachelor status of the Marquis of Alverstoke is threatened when he becomes entangled with Miss Frederica and her extraordinary family.
" To Irishangel513 I had forgotten G.Heyer. I really enjoyed her books some time ago. I'll have to go back & reread them again. Also check out Clare Darcy's books. If I remember correctly, it's on the same style.

Yes, I've read many of his books. The Xanth series is very popular. But, he has written many other very good series. The Apprentice Adept series is one of my favorites. This is a blend of sf and fantasy. I also liked the Incarnations of Immortality series about a poor sucker who becomes Death, as in the Grim Reaper!

My brother gave me the two books as a gift because I have a thing about dragons and wizards and such. I also felt that it wasn't a 'deep' read but I don't think it was meant to be.
I found it to be a story that kept moving and growing. A series where the next book will be anticipated for its forward movement and character development.
I have not read Eldest yet but I liked hearing that it is better. It will be one of my next reads. Lots of possibility.

I too received Eragon and Eldest for Christmas. I have not yet started to read them but those I know who have read this book has told me that they are good books to read. Maybe I should read them to the kids at bedtime like a chapter book so they can look forward to what happens next. For those of you who have already read these books, what do you think of this book as bedtime reading?

Didn't Antonio Banderas play Zorro? for some reason I'm thinking he did...hmm...now I'm not sure...But he would make a good Ranger too! I'm a Grey's Anatomy fan too so I'm trying to think of which brown haired girl you would like as Stephanie...the Ortho doc who married George..Callie? Or Meredith's little sister? OOOHH McSteamy for Joe?? Now why didn't I think of that? I Pictured Sandra Bullock from her Miss Congeniality movie...Tough girl...yet not...still needed the guys to help her out! LOL!!! I just bought Plum Lovin and Plum Lucky but haven't had a chance to sit down and start them.

Is there anyone that is caught up in "The Outlander series"? Every one that I have turned onto this series just can't get enough. I have read the first 6 books 4 times now, waiting patiently for 7 & 8. Six friends have read this series now at my urging and they can't get enough of it, we are all waiting for Diana Gabaldon to publish #7. Is there any one that is reading or has read it out there? I would love to hear what you have to say about the series.

Thanks for all of the response to my posting. :-) I am happy to report that I went and purchased all of the books in the Outlander Series the other day. I am now engrossed in Dragonfly in Amber. I haven't purchased the "Outlandish Companion". I may have to some time in the future, but I have found the Internet useful for looking things up from the books that I don't understand. But, on the whole, I haven't had too much trouble. I have a passing comprehension of French and for the Gaelic, I can usually get the meaning from how it is used. Or, as I said, go to the Internet. It will take me at least until the new book comes out later this year to "catch up". And I will have to look into the suggested series of DeathLands and also your suggestion, Rainy49, of Alas Babalon. I hope to continue to get answers to my posts. So we can discuss the books and all. Thanks, Tracey
